Terms of Service

Last updated:

These terms cover the PDFixel browser extension. The PDFixel web app at pdfixel.app is a separate product on separate terms. By installing or using the extension you agree to what follows.

1. What the extension is

A set of document and image tools that run inside your browser. PDFs, images and the canvas editor are all processed locally on your device. There is no upload step because there is no server to upload to.

2. The free tier

10 documents per day, and every feature.

Nothing is locked behind the paid tier. Every tool, every setting, every encoder option, every preset, and batches of any size are available on the free tier. The only difference between free and Pro is how many documents you may work on in a day.

Two things about the count that are in your favour:

  • The unit is a document, not an action. Opening the same file again, re-encoding it at a different quality, cropping and exporting it twice, or retrying a job that failed all cost nothing extra. It is still the same document.
  • The day resets at your local midnight, not at a fixed hour somewhere else.

3. Pro

PlanPrice
Monthly$5.79 USD / month
Yearly$48.79 USD / year, including a 7-day free trial

Pro removes the daily limit. It adds no features, because none are withheld.

Prices are in US dollars and exclusive of any tax that applies where you are; tax is calculated at checkout by our payment provider.

Dodo Payments is our Merchant of Record. Your subscription contract for payment purposes is with Dodo, who collects payment, handles tax and issues your invoice. Card details never reach us or the extension.

The 7-day trial

The trial is attached to the yearly plan. If you cancel before it ends, you are not charged. If you do not cancel, the first yearly payment is taken when it ends.

4. Your licence key, and the one-device rule

Pro is delivered as a licence key, emailed to you on purchase. There is no account to create and no password to remember.

A key activates one device at a time. That is not a restriction on how many machines you may own — it is a restriction on how many may be active simultaneously.

To move to another machine:

  1. Open the Pro panel on the device you are leaving and press Deactivate
  2. Enter the same key on the new device

You may do this as often as you like.

If you reinstall, or reset your browser profile

This case is worth stating because it will happen, and because the obvious fix does not work.

Uninstalling the extension or clearing your browser profile removes the activation record from your device — including the id needed to release the activation. Our payment provider still holds the activation, so entering the key again reports that it is already in use, and there is no longer a device to press Deactivate on.

Use the Manage licence page, linked from the Pro panel inside the extension, to release the activation. Then activate again as normal. Your subscription is unaffected; only the device registration needs clearing.

5. Working offline

Pro continues to work without an internet connection.

The licence is confirmed with our payment provider every 3 minutes while the window is open and visible, and pauses entirely when it is not. If those checks cannot reach the provider — you are offline, behind a firewall, or the service is briefly unavailable — Pro keeps working for 7 days from the last successful check.

Reconnect within that window and it resumes silently. Past it, the extension returns to the free tier and picks Pro back up automatically the next time a check succeeds. You do not need to re-enter your key.

A failed check never downgrades you. Only a provider explicitly reporting that the key is no longer valid does that, which happens if the subscription is cancelled, refunded or released from another device.

6. What the tools do not do

Stated here rather than left to be discovered. None of the following are bugs or temporary gaps, and none of them are grounds for a refund on their own — see the Refund Policy.

No redaction
A black box drawn over text does not remove the text — it stays extractable underneath. Shipping something that looks like redaction but is not would be worse than shipping nothing.
No digital signatures
Browser storage cannot protect a signing key, so there is nothing safe to sign with.
No form filling
Every operation rebuilds the pages, which discards interactive form fields.
No document comparison
Not implemented.
Text recognition is English and printed text only
No handwriting. One language model ships because each additional one adds megabytes for everyone, and recognised text is a good reading rather than a guaranteed transcript — confidence is reported per page so you can judge it.
Extracted text does not recover columns
Multi-column layout is not reconstructed from a PDF.
Image metadata is always removed
EXIF, GPS coordinates, IPTC, XMP and ICC profiles are discarded on every export. This is not a setting: encoding works from decoded pixels, so no code path preserves them. Files that arrive carrying location data are flagged when you add them.
Animated GIF and WebP lose their frames
Detected when you add the file rather than flattened silently.
Background removal finds a colour, not a subject
It works on plain, even backdrops. A busy photograph is out of scope, and no tolerance setting fixes that.
No colour management
Everything is treated as sRGB.
Nothing is generated or upscaled
No AI object removal, no subject detection, no upscaling. Those models are too large to ship inside a browser extension.
An interrupted batch is not resumed
You are warned before closing the window with work in progress.

7. Acceptable use

Use the extension on files you own or have permission to process. Do not use it to circumvent protection on documents you have no right to open, and do not attempt to resell or redistribute a licence key.

8. What we do not warrant

The extension is provided as is. Document and image processing is complex and file formats are inconsistent in practice, so we cannot warrant that every file produces a perfect result.

Keep your originals. Every tool works on a copy and writes a new file, but the responsibility for keeping the source file is yours. We are not liable for data loss, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid in the twelve months before the claim.

9. Ending it

You may cancel at any time through the customer portal linked from the Pro panel. Pro runs to the end of the period you have paid for; cancelling part way through does not create a prorated refund. See the Refund Policy.

We may suspend a licence for a breach of these terms, a chargeback, or fraudulent payment.

10. Changes

Material changes to these terms appear here with an updated date before they take effect in a published version of the extension.

11. Contact

extension support. The extension has 26 tools and one inbox; anything about these terms can go there.
